Order Type Decision Helper

Faced with a pile of order types and not sure which to learn first? Answer two or three questions and it matches you up — it tells you which order type to understand, not to go place this particular trade.

Start by learning

NoteThis just matches a common need to an order type so you know which one to go learn — it is not trading advice of any kind. Every order type has its own traps (slippage on market orders, non-fills on limit orders, trigger prices on stop orders), so open the matching article and understand it before you use it. To see them all in one place, read what order types are and how they differ.

Getting the most out of this tool

How it decides: it branches on two questions — "do you need to fill immediately" decides market vs. limit; "do you want it to trigger automatically at a price" decides whether to use a stop order; "do you want to place two at once" decides whether to use OCO. It tells you which order type to learn first, not which trade to place.

Where it applies: a beginner matching tool that narrows down what you need to study. It doesn't cover advanced uses (iceberg, trailing orders) and it doesn't read the market. For the traps of each order type, open the matching article.

Common mistakes: ① reaching for market orders for speed and ignoring slippage; ② setting a limit price too far away, never filling, and thinking the order is stuck; ③ entering the trigger price and limit price the wrong way round on a stop order and getting rejected.

Example scenarios: "want to buy now, a roughly-right price is fine" → market order; "want to wait for a lower price and leave it resting" → limit order; "auto stop-loss at a price" → stop order. To see them all in one place, read what order types are and how they differ.
